Etymology

The word is translated from "κατηγορία", which was borrowed by the Japanese scholar Inoue Tetsujirō (井上哲次郎) in A Dictionary of Philosophy (哲學字彙, Tetsugaku jii, 1881) as a translation of the English word "category", based on the phrase "洪範九疇" in Book of Documents (《尚書》or《書經》).
