Etymology

Appears to be a coinage in Japanese from Middle Chinese-derived components, as a compound of (katsu, the Jie people, part of the Five Barbarians confederation in antiquity) + (ko, drum). So called for the putative origins of the drum design,[1][2] introduced to Japan during the Nara period.[1]
