Etymology

Ultimately from Middle Chinese 自首 (MC d͡ziɪH ɕɨuH, literally “self + report to the authorities; plead guilty”). Borrowed into Old Japanese, where its first mention is in the Ritsuryō legal code of 718 CE.[1]
