Etymology

Compound of (shige, thick, frequent, close together, the stem of adjective 繁い (shigei), in reference to the tight wrapping) + (, rattan).[1][2] Might be encountered in some texts as shigetō, using the unvoiced kan'on reading for the second character.[3][4]

The spelling for the shige portion could be analyzed as a kind of jukujikun (熟字訓), considering the "layers" sense of the kanji.

Attested from the late 1400s.[1]
