靑丹よし

Etymology

Literally “blue-green + (red) earth + [​exclamatory particle] + [​strengthening particle]”.

The first sense refers to 奈良坂, 平城坂 (Narasaka, hill-road north of the modern city of Nara) where its soil made for excellent paints and pigments were said to be extracted there.

靑丹よし (awoni yo2si) (kana あをによし)

  1. allusion to 奈良 (Nara, a placename)
