Of native Korean origin. From 겉 (geot-, “unpeeled, without further preparation”) + 절 (jeol, stem form of the verb 절다 (jeolda, “to be pickled, be marinated”)) + 이 (-i, “-er, -or”, agent noun suffix). Literally, “pickled thing without further preparation”.
