First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 노리개 (Yale: nwolikay). From 놀— (nol-, “to play”) + (i, nominalizing suffix) + (gae, instrumental suffix).
