Etymology

Borrowed from Japanese タバコ (tabako) or たばこ (tabako, tobacco). Found in 1614 as 담파고 (Yale: tamphakwo, 淡婆姑), and thereafter as 담파귀 (dampagwi), 담바 (damba), 담ᄇᆡ.

  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)/(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
