  1. (phonetics) the Korean fortis consonant /s͈/, written ㅆ
  2. (historical) the jamo ㅅ when used as the first element of a digraph denoting the fortis consonants. This was the most common way to write the fortis consonants from the time that they emerged as separate phonemes, in about 1600, to about 1900. These spellings are now deprecated and obsolete.
