First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 보로ᇝ〮ᄃᆞᆯ〮 (Yale: pwòlwóm-s-tól), equivalent to 보름 (boreum, fifteenth day of the lunar month) + (dal, moon).
