Borrowed from Middle Mongolian ᠡᠪᠴᠢᠭᠦᠨ (ebčigün, breastbone), whence also Mongolian өвчүү (övčüü). Ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *ebcexün (breastbone, sternum).
