Borrowed from Middle Mongolian ᠡᠪᠴᠢᠭᠦᠨ (ebčigün, “breastbone”), whence also Mongolian өвчүү (övčüü). Ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *ebcexün (“breastbone, sternum”).
