Etymology

Generally thought to be derived from Middle Chinese η­† (MC pΛ iΙͺt̚, β€œwriting brush”). Cognate to Old Uyghur [script needed] (biti-, β€œto write”), Karakhanid [script needed] (biti-, β€œto write”), Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (biti-, β€œto be destined”). See also Mongolian Π±ΠΈΡ‡ΠΈΡ… (bičih, β€œto write”), a Turkic borrowing.
