Inherited from Sanskrit नीत (nītá, “led”). Cognate with Maharastri Prakrit 𑀡𑀺𑀅 (ṇia), Ardhamagadhi Prakrit 𑀦𑀺𑀬 (niya), Magadhi Prakrit 𑀡𑀻𑀤 (ṇīda), Pali nīta.
