Etymology

First attested as doevendrecht in 1308. From Middle Dutch Dovendrecht. Compound of Middle Dutch Doeve (“a personal name”) and drecht (“ferry, watercourse”). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to the plural form of duif (“pigeon”).
