Probably merged from three medieval Germanic personal names. The second part is rīhhi (“ruler”). The first part is Proto-Germanic *amalaz (“vigor, bravery”), *haimaz (“home”), or Proto-Germanic *ermunaz (“great, strong; whole, complete”). Comparable to English Emery and Amory, and distantly to Henry. Possibly cognate to Hungarian Imre. See also Italian Enrico and Amerigo, from the latter of which America is derived.
