Possibly an unshifted northern form (compare southern Ganser) from the merger of Middle High German ganser, ganzer, ganze with Middle Low German gante, from Old High German ganzo, earlier ganaʒʒo, ultimately related to Proto-Germanic *ganzô. See English gander for more.
