From the Hanyu Pinyin romanization of the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese 洪澤/洪泽 (Hóngzé), bestowed on the lake by Emperor Yang of Sui in 616 out of pleasure encountering rain after an inspection tour through drought-afflicted areas.
