According to Vocabolario Treccani, perhaps a univerbation of il (“the”) + dio (“god”). Perhaps a back formation from "d'Iddio", confusion of "di Dio" ("God's") /di‿dˈdi.o/, due to its unusual word-starting syntactic gemination (See pronunciation at dio).
