Etymology
Part of the scientific jargon since the 19th or 20th century. Attested since at least the 16th century. First only dialectally in the Eifel region of Germany, home to many maars, both as a label for maars as well as within specific names for them. Further origin is not unambiguously known but likely to be from Vulgar Latin mara, from Latin mare.
