Etymology

Unknown. Possibly from Byzantine Greek πανγάλια (pangália), from παν- (pan-) +‎ καλός (kalós) +‎ -ία (-ía). Alternately, from (or assimilated to) Nogai mangali, from mangal, from Arabic مَنْقَل‎ (manqal). First attested in Carta Pisana (13th century) as Pangalia.
