Etymology

Initialism of 內地生／内地生 (nèidìshēng). Also a pun on Nintendo DS, a gaming console, often abbreviated to NDS. The gaming console is foldable (摺／折), whereas the students are not socializing with others (摺／折). Hence the double entendre between foldable and not socializing with others, both written as 摺／折.
