Etymology
The city is believed to be a trading post in the past. Officially, the Iranun words pagad (“to wait”) and padian (“a market”), are accepted as the roots of the city's name. .
Alternatively after a bird that the native inhabitants call gagadian. Also probrably from the Cebuano word pangadye (“a prayer”) or pangadyian ("a place to pray" or "land of prayers"). The name Pagadian is also speculated to be derived from the Subanen word pengadian (“a school”).
