Etymology

Borrowed from Old Median *spiθrah, from Proto-Iranian *cwiθráh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwitráh, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwit-ró-s, from *ḱweyt- (to shine) + *-rós. Doublet of *siçaʰ (white), whence borrowing Sanskrit सीस (sī́sa, lead). Cognate with Sanskrit श्वित्र (śvitrá, white, whitish).[1]
