Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₂-on-, variant of *h₂éwh₂os (“older male relative: uncle, maternal grandfather”), with analogical *-tīr (from PIE *-tēr) as in *ɸatīr, *mātīr, *brātīr etc. Cognate with Latin avunculus (“~ maternal uncle”), Proto-Germanic *awô (“grandfather”).
