Etymology

Borrowing from Proto-Slavic *vьrtъ (compare Polish wart) or *vьrta (compare Polish Warta). An earlier borrowing from Balto-Slavic is also possible. Origin from Baltic (cf. Lithuanian vìrti) is less likely due to second syllable -a.
