Etymology

Participial form of Proto-Kartvelian *šew- ~ *šw- (to give birth). In some Old Georgian pieces, შჳლი (šwili) is attested from weakening (v). The Zan forms regularly correspond to Georgian, although the original (v) there is lost and an irregular change k < has taken place.
