Reconstruction:Proto-Japonic/atarasi

This Proto-Japonic entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Proto-Japonic

Etymology

A surface analysis suggests a derivation from *ataru, however the only phonetic match is 当たる (ataru, to get hit, to compete, attested 720). A standalone adverb in Old Japanese 可惜 (atara, regrettably) exists, so it might be derived from the adverb.

Adjective

*atarasi

  1. regrettable, precious

Descendants

  • Old Japanese: 可惜し (atarasi)
  • Proto-Ryukyuan: *atarasi
    • Northern Ryukyuan:
      • Kunigami: 惜せん, 可惜せん (hathārasen)
      • Okinawan: 惜さん, 可惜さん (atarasan)
