From Proto-Iranian *tixtáh, from Proto-Iranian *tiktás, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tig-tó-s, from *(s)teyg- (to be sharp) + *-tós. Cognate with Yidgha [script needed] (taγd), Sarikoli tēid (sharp), Sanskrit तिक्त (tiktá, bitter).
