Proto-Tai *zwɯəjᴬ (“sand”), whence Thai ทราย (saai, “sand”), Lao ຊາຍ (sāi, “sand”) and Zhuang saiz (“sand”), is a loan either from Old Chinese 沙 (OC *sraːl, *sraːls, “sand”) or from this Proto-Sino-Tibetan root itself.
