From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kimelаs, from Proto-Indo-European km̥H-el-i-, probably onomatopoeic from a root *kemH- (to hum) + *-eľь.

Cognate with Lithuanian kamanė (bumblebee), Latvian kamene (bumblebee), Old Prussian camus (bumblebee), Proto-Germanic *humelaz (bumblebee).
