Etymology

From an earlier *obvolkъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *abwalkas. Morphologically from *ȍb- + *vȏlkъ. It literally means "a thing that shambles (in the sky)". For the loss of the v, compare Bulgarian вол (vol, ox) and ол (ol) (dialectal).
