Etymology

From earlier *skubti < Proto-Balto-Slavic *skaub⁽ˀ⁾téi, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewbʰ-. Related to Lithuanian skùbti (to hurry) (n-infix present), Latvian skubinât (to urge, to push). Further akin to Proto-Germanic *skeubaną (to shove), Persian آشفتن (âšoftan, to agitate), Sanskrit क्षुभ्यति (kṣubhyati, to shake).
