From Proto-Balto-Slavic *st(е)ibas, from Proto-Indo-European *steib(ʰ)- or *stib(ʰ)- (stem, cane), from *stebʰ- (to harden, stiffen; pole, stalk). Cognate with Lithuanian stíebas, Ancient Greek σταφυλή (staphulḗ).
