Likely the l-participle of an unattested verb **teti (to become/be hot) + *-lъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *tep-, from Proto-Indo-European *tep-. Cognate with Sanskrit tap- (hot), Latin tepeō (be hot) whence English tepid.
