- Vasmer: from *ud- + *-slo.
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian áudžiu, áudžiau, áusti (“to weave”), Latvian aûst, aûžu.
Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit वयति (vayati, “to weave”), Old Armenian զ-աւդեմ (z-awdem, “bind, tie”).
