From Proto-Mongolic *kam- (“to gather”) + *-ug. Akin to Proto-Mongolic *kam-tu (“together”), Proto-Tungusic *kam-ur (“together”).
First written form Old Turkic 𐰴𐰢𐰍 (qamağ).
