Etymology

Probably borrowed from a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ-, *h₂éǵeti, but the exact form and source language remains undetermined. Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háȷ́ati, sometimes proposed, does not appear likely, as the Indo-Iranian *j would probably not have been reflected by a Uralic *j.
