Possible secondary full-grade nominative of unattested Proto-Germanic *iskaną, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂is-sḱ-é-ti, from *h₂eys- + *-sḱéti. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *jьskati (to look for, seek), Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hišćáti (to wish, desire).
