     The “living fossil”, metasequoia, for example, was once distributed over large areas of Europe, Asia and the Americas from the Cretaceous to the Tertiary periods. Destroyed by glaciers, its natural distribution in China is today limited to Sichuan’s Shizhu county, Hubei’s Lichuan county and Hunan’s Longshan county.
