Borrowed from Russian Ташкент (Taškent), from Uzbek Toshkent, compound of tosh (“stone”) + Old Turkic [script needed] (kend, “city”) (compare Turkish kent), the latter borrowed from Sogdian [Term?] (/kand/, “city”).
