Transoxiana

From Latin Transoxiana, from trans (“beyond”) + Oxus (“Amu Darya”), literally “lands beyond Oxus”, ultimately after Arabic مَا وَراءَ النَّهْر‎ (mā warāʔa n-nahr, literally “what is beyond the river”).

Transoxiana

1. (historical) An ancient portion of Central Asia, the region between the Amu Darya (Classical Oxus) and Syr Darya rivers, corresponding approximately with modern-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and southwest Kazakhstan.
