From Proto-Slavic *vesna (“spring”), deified as a Slavic goddess of spring, birth and renewal.
Cognate with Ancient Greek ἔαρ (éar), Old Norse vár, Lithuanian vasara, Sanskrit वसर् (vasar, “morning”) and वसन्त (vasantá, “spring”), Persian بهار (bahâr, “spring”), Old Armenian գարուն (garun).
