Borrowed from Middle Low German [Term?], from Old Norse fjellfräs (mountain cat), from fjall (mountain) (cognate to English fell (mountain)). Cognate with present day dialectal Norwegian fjellfross (mountain tomcat). Respelled based on the folk-etymological belief that it had the same derivation as Vielfraß (gluttonous person).
