Etymology

From Ukrainian О́стрів Змії́ний (Óstriv Zmijínyj, Óstriv Zmiyínyy), from Romanian Insula Șerpilor (Serpent Island), from Russian Змеиный (Zmeinyj, Zmeinyy), from Greek Φιδονήσι (Fidonísi, Fidonisi), from Greek φιδο (fido, fido)+νήσι (nísi, nisi). Renamed by the Ottoman Greeks to Snake Island, from its previous name Isle Achilles (Achilleis).
