Etymology
From Ukrainian О́стрів Змії́ний (Óstriv Zmijínyj, “Óstriv Zmiyínyy”), from Romanian Insula Șerpilor (“Serpent Island”), from Russian Змеиный (Zmeinyj, “Zmeinyy”), from Greek Φιδονήσι (Fidonísi, “Fidonisi”), from Greek φιδο (fido, “fido”)+νήσι (nísi, “nisi”). Renamed by the Ottoman Greeks to Snake Island, from its previous name Isle Achilles (Achilleis).
