Through French alkékenge, Spanish alquequenje, from Arabic كَاكَنْج (kākanj).

  1. A herbaceous plant of the nightshade family (Alkekengi officinarum, syn. Physalis alkekengi).
  2. The flavoursome berry of this plant.
