From Ancient Greek ἀρθρωδία (arthrōdía), from ἀρθρώδης (arthrṓdēs, “well articulated”).

- (anatomy) A form of diarthrodial articulation in which the articular surfaces are nearly flat, so that they form only an imperfect ball and socket joint.
