From Proto-Vietic *bɔː (“zebu; bovine”). Probably ultimately of imitative origin.
Compare Vietnamese ụm bò (“moo”) and items such as Malay lembu, Khmu [Cuang] lmboʔ and Cebuano amba, which are superficially similar but lack straightforward correspondence with the Vietnamese word.
