From Old Portuguese baynna, vaynna, inherited from Latin vāgīna (“sheath”). Compare Portuguese bainha, Spanish vaina, Catalan beina, also French gaine, Italian guaina. Cf. also Galician vaxina, a borrowing from the same source.
