Etymology
Vulgar Latin *bene venūtus. By surface analysis, ben (“well”, apocopic form of bene) + venuto (“come”, past participle of venire). Presumably a calque of a Gothic term, from Proto-Germanic *wiljakwumô (“a welcome guest or arrival”), from which many modern Germanic forms descend, as English welcome.
