Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *brūcāria or Medieval Latin brūgāria (heath), a derivative of Late Latin *brūcus (heather), from Gaulish *brūcos, from Proto-Celtic *wroikos. Equivalent to bruc + -era.

Cognate to Occitan bruguièra, French bruyère, Norman brüethe, Lombard brughera, and Italian brughiera.
